Arsenal have confirmed the sale of Ivory Coast winger Gervinho to Serie A club Roma, the Daily Telegraph has reported. The former Lille player moves to the Italian capital for an undisclosed fee.
Gervinho joined the Gunners in the
summer of 2011 but struggled for form in north London, scoring only four times
in his first season at the club and netting seven the season after. He fell out
of favour under Arsene Wenger through last season, with five of his goals
coming in the campaign’s opening seven games.
Roma have now made 13 signings this
summer as they seek to rebuild their squad following a sixth-place finish in
Serie A. New Coach Rudi Garcia worked with Gervinho at Lille, claiming the
Coupe de France and the Ligue 1 title. He left Lille for Roma this summer.
Gervinho has 45 caps for his country
to his name and started his career at the ASEC Abidjan academy, later joining
Bevern of Belgium before moving to France, first with Le Mans before he came to
prominence at Lille.
On confirming the sale, Arsenal’s
statement on the club’s official website read: “Everyone at Arsenal would
like to thank Gervinho for his contribution to the club and wish him well for
his future career.”
