ARSENAL NEEDS TO MAKE A MOVE FOR LUIZ GUSTAVO
Luiz Gustavo represents the perfect solution for Arsenal’s defensive midfield problems at this point in the transfer window. The player had an influential part in Brazil’s Confederations Cup-winning
campaign, where him and Paulinho were imperious in the Selecao’s midfield. Arsenal’s need for a defensive midfielder was heightened in the Emirates Cup, as Napoli ripped them apart time and time again with their quick counter attacks. Ever since Alex Song left the club for Camp Nou, Arsenal have been devoid of a proper midfield destroyer. Wenger can no longer count on Abou Diaby being fit for an entire season to do the job.
With Wolfsburg sniffing around for Gustavo, Kicker reports that Bayern are willing to let the Brazilian go. Wolfsburg have already inquired about the player, and the Bavarian giants have allowed Gustavo to talk to the club. Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says that “if Wolfsburg agree with him, there will be more conversations”. Under Pep Guardiola, the club have made signings in the form of Mario Gotze and Thiago Alcantara this summer. Rummenigge claims that Luis Gustavo is the final player Bayern will consider selling, after which no one will go in or out of Munich henceforth this summer.
Arsenal have to wake up and realize that a quality player who fulfils many of their needs may be falling out of their grasp. Seeing Arsenal’s inability in the transfer window thus far, Gustavo could also provide back up to the center back position against lower clubs in which they can afford to play Ramsey in the defensive midfield position. Gustavo is an integral part of a national team which recently decimated the invincible Spain. Wenger would do well to substantiate his interest in the player before it is too late.
