Manager Arsène Wenger insists he is still looking to strengthen his squad this summer
Arsène Wenger insists he is still looking to strengthen his Arsenal squad this summer despite the lack of inbound transfer activity at Emirates Stadium.
The Arsenal manager is reported to be interested in luring 26-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo to north London and is also keen on signing want-away Liverpool striker Luis Suárez.
The Gunners have so far only signed 20-year-old French striker Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer from Auxerre in the current window.
But Wenger is still hoping to bolster his squad in preparation for the new Premier League season, which kicks off on Saturday as Arsenal host Aston Villa.
“We are in the transfer market and we try still to strengthen our squad,” Wenger told Arsenal Player.
“It’s important as well now to focus on the squad who are already at the club and that you focus on the competition, not only on the transfer market.”
Arsenal are understood to have had two bids for Suárez rejected in recent weeks as Liverpool continue to insist that the Uruguay international is not for sale.
And speaking at the weekend, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers moved to rule out the possibility of the 26-year-old moving to one of Liverpool’s Premier League rivals.
“We’re adamant that he [Suárez] won’t be going to Arsenal, that’s for sure. We want to keep him,” said Rodgers.
“There’s been lots of speculation about all these clubs. I was made aware at the end of last season that we were going to have a number of clubs come in for him. We’ve had one [Arsenal], and that’s been it.
“Our intention is to keep Luis Suárez, so the story’s the same really.”
