Liverpool owner John W Henry has said there is no chance the club will consent to selling Luis Suarez to Arsenal, according to the Daily Mirror.
Henry added that with the transfer
window well in to its final month, the Reds will not sell the unsettled
Uruguayan to anyone because they wouldn’t have time to find a suitable
replacement. But,
Henry explained, he would be loath to sell Suarez to the
Gunners as he views Arsene Wenger’s team as one of Liverpool’s rivals for a
place in the Champions League.
“We are not going to sell Luis.
It’s a football reason, it’s not about finances,” Henry said. “It’s
because at this point it’s impossible, so late in the window, with everyone
who’s already moved or isn’t moving, to replace him. So for football reasons,
we can’t - and especially to Arsenal.”
He continued: “For all the top
clubs it’s extremely important but especially Liverpool because we’re not in
Europe this year and have not been in the Champions League for a while.
Obviously, to sell to a rival for one of those positions would be ludicrous.”
Suarez has repeatedly made plain his
desire to leave Anfield, claiming that the club has reneged on an agreement to
sell him this summer. Arsenal attempted to trigger a release clause in the
26-year-old’s contract, only for the clause to guarantee the offer would be
discussed, not accepted, with Liverpool rejected the bid accordingly.
Henry went on to suggest that Suarez
owes Liverpool his loyalty after the club stood by him during a number of
controversial events, including an eight-game ban for racially abusing Patrice
Evra and a 10-game ban, of which he has served only four games, for biting Branislav
Ivanovic.
He continued: “If you look at the full
context of what’s happened here, it’s jarring to all our supporters. The club
has stood by him so strongly at a time you could question whether the club
should have stood by him, but they did.”
