Arsene Wenger is close to capturing
Arsenal’s first major signing of the summer, the Daily Mirror has reported, as Bayern Munich midfielder
Luiz Gustavo nears a move to the Emirates Stadium.
The
fee for the Brazil international is said to be in the region of £14m, with
Gustavo choosing the Gunners over Chelsea and Wolfsburg, according to the
newspaper. Gustavo was part of the triumphant Brazil squad at this summer’s
Confederations Cup, and of the all-conquering Bayern Munich team that won the
Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League last season.
Wenger
revealed that he is concerned about the depth in the Arsenal squad, a problem
he hopes Gustavo can help address, although the manager was reluctant to give
too much away. “There is nothing concrete - at the moment,” Wenger said.
“We want to play 55 games this ¬season and I think we are a little bit thin
squad-wise.”
The
Frenchman added that he still hoped to make Luis Suarez Arsenal’s headline
arrival, and is pleased not to have lost any major names as he has in years
past. “I also haven’t given up hope on Suarez. If I read what people are
saying about him, then maybe I would give up. But we will do it the right way,”
Wenger revealed.
“I
am an optimist. That’s why I do this job. We have kept the squad together for
the first time in many years so I am happy.”
